8 Badass Strategies for Turning Challenges into Success Stories
Let’s talk about conflict. Yeah, conflict is a word that typically makes our stomachs flip a little. It’s awkward and uncomfortable, and most would rather avoid it altogether.
There are some of you out there, though. Those ready to love conflict because, through conflict well, keep reading to discover what is great and how to love it. Like it. Okay, maybe appreciate it.
Conflict is messy, whether it’s a tense moment at work, a heated argument with someone close, or a full-on disagreement. But there are (at least) two things that are true about conflict:
- Conflict is a natural part of our lives, a byproduct of our messy human nature. It’s here to stay, regardless of how often we wish to banish it permanently. But remember, it’s not a sign of failure but a sign of our humanity.
- Conflict doesn’t have to be the antagonist in your story. It can be the catalyst that ignites some of your most significant breakthroughs. It’s an opportunity for growth, not a roadblock.
What is the difference between people who survive conflict and those who thrive through it? It’s all about how you handle it. So, let’s dig into some badass ways to turn those tense moments into triumphs.
1. Change How You See Conflict
Let’s flip the script. Instead of seeing conflict as a problem, what if you viewed it as a chance to grow? Conflict has a sneaky way of revealing what’s not working, whether it’s a misunderstanding, a misalignment of goals, or simply poor communication.
We can agree that generally speaking, it’s not fun. Can we also agree that it can be helpful? Some points to consider:
- One of the best ways to navigate a negative situation is to change our perspective; that’s been a hack for generations.
- For instance, what if the complicated conversation you’re avoiding is the one that could lead to a breakthrough in your project? Or what if the conflict at work is an opportunity to learn more about your colleagues and improve your teamwork?
- What if your current situation helps you (and others) grow?
The next time conflict shows up, ask yourself, “What’s this trying to teach me?” This simple question can shift your mindset from stressed-out to curious. Curiosity is where progress begins. Let’s get curious together!
2. Listen… No, Really. Listen
Listening in conflict resolution means hearing the words and understanding the emotions and intentions behind them. It’s about empathizing with the other person’s perspective, even if you disagree.
How often do we wish someone would listen for once?!
It turns out that those with whom we might be in conflict tend to feel the same way: they haven’t been listened to or observed. Listening occurs when we turn off internal and external noises, thoughts, and actions.
Here’s how to nail it:
- Put your distractions down. Give the conversation your full attention.
- Repeat what they said so they know you heard them (“So what I’m hearing is…”). Ask them if that is what they were saying—be ready for them to say no. Then, push them to tell you more.
- Acknowledge their feelings even if you disagree.
HINT: This is the hard part.
However, these steps are critical to diffuse tension. As a bonus, if we truly listen to our counterparts, we may start to understand their position and, in doing so, begin the process of alignment. Winning here!

3. Don’t Make It Personal
When things get heated, it’s super easy to start pointing fingers. And even if they don’t get heated, it’s still easy to point fingers—this is conflict, after all.
But if you want to solve the problem — like a badass leader — you’ve got to separate the issue from the person. It may have started with a he-said-she-said, but it’s more than that: our #1 priority for navigating conflict is to get to cohesion.
As badass leaders, our job is to help facilitate the conversation that starts with what went wrong and ends with how to fix it.
Pro tip: When it’s your turn to share, remember the importance of facts (what actually happened), feelings (how it made you feel), and impact (how it affects your team or relationship).

4. Stick to the Facts
For example, in a work setting, if there’s a disagreement about a project deadline, sticking to the facts about when the task was assigned and when it was due can help keep the conversation focused and productive.
Here’s a quick checklist:
- What happened? (No exaggerations, just the facts.)
- How did it impact things? Emotionally? Physically? etc. (Be specific.)
- What can we do about it? What are the actions we can take? (Focus on solutions.)

5. Let Healthy Debate Happen
This one is challenging, but if you can execute #1-4, you can handle #5. Although it might be a hot take, debate can be good. We believe in you. Dig in!
When handled correctly, disagreements can lead to some of the best ideas and breakthroughs. But it’s all about setting the tone for respectful back-and-forth. Think of it as brainstorming but with a little more spice. Healthy debate forces everyone to challenge their assumptions and bring their A-game.
Keys:
- Environment: For it to work, you need the right environment. Not to mention that a healthy environment benefits the entire group.
- It’s Not Personal: It’s better to attack the problem, not the person. Focusing on the problem keeps the conversation productive and prevents it from getting personal.
- Focus: Stay solution-focused. Instead of dwelling on what went wrong, focus on figuring out what can go right.
- Remember, it’s not just about resolving the conflict but about the growth and learning that comes with it. When you’ve successfully navigated a conflict, take a moment to celebrate your growth. You’ve earned it!
It’s a cliché for a reason, but sometimes it’s okay to “agree to disagree” —and move on. Not every debate needs unanimous agreement. Not every conflict needs complete resolution. Sometimes, all you need to move forward is mutual understanding and respect. Give your conversation space for this healthy debate.

6. Turn the Mess Into a Message
Going from conflict to cohesion can be messy and leave scars. Reflect on what worked and didn’t and how you can handle things better next time. There’s a reason why we naturally avoid conflict: it typically involves hurt, disagreement, and disappointment. However, as I mentioned in #1, every challenge is a chance to learn, and every resolution proves that you (and/or your team) can handle tough stuff. That my friend is BADASS.
So, when you have a mess to clean up, remember to have a different perspective. After all, we are dealing with humans in these conflicts, and when it comes to humans, we need to be human ourselves. Keep growth at the top of your mind when you’re on the other side of conflict. And although that’s challenging—especially in the moment—more often than not, individuals who can turn a mess into a message and learn from the situation yield positive results.
Questions to consider:
- What did we (or I) learn from this?
- How can we (or I) prevent this from happening again?
- Where was the breakdown? Was it in communication or expectation?
- Is there a pattern of behavior, or is this one of those things that “just happen?” And if it is a pattern, what changes do we (or I) need to make to break it?
- How would we (or I) navigate this situation differently? (A framework I like to employ is asking myself what advice I would give a friend experiencing a similar situation?)
Asking a mix (or all!) of these questions during and after conflict can help you navigate the murkiness of conflict and turn a potential mess into a powerful message.
