True Friendship: Wisdom, Truth, and Unconditional Love

This is one of my favorite quotes from a dear friend. I love it so much that I use it often, especially when addressing my friends who claim their relentless teasing is a sign of “love.”

I’m a big fan of John Maxwell’s “Word of the Day. ” His word, “Togetherness,” recently made me reflect on friendship. (You can listen to John’s thoughts here: John Maxwell on Togetherness.)

How amazing is true togetherness with the right person? A friend who knows your secrets and loves you anyway. The one who’s already halfway to your house when you call, desperate for help, a hug, or wisdom.

Wisdom—My Key to Friendship

Who do I want to be together with? What does my friendship manual say about true friends? Here’s what I believe:

“Leadership is not about titles, positions, or flowcharts. It is about one life influencing another.” — John C. Maxwell

1. A True Friend Tells the Truth

Even when you’d rather hear a comforting lie.

My favorite friends aren’t the ones who tell me I’m always right, wise, or perfect. They don’t flatter me with, “Wow, you look like you’ve lost weight!” or laugh at all my jokes just to agree.

Instead, they pray for me to make the right choices, even when it is they are difficult. They challenge me when I settle for less. They remind me of my past mistakes—not to shame me but to help me grow.

“The godly give good advice to their friends; the wicked lead them astray.” — Proverbs 12:26

2. True Friends Make You a Better Person

“When the character of a man is not clear to you, look at his friends.” — Unknown.

Surrounding yourself with the right people shapes who you become.

“Don’t befriend angry people or associate with hot-tempered people, or you will learn to be like them and endanger your soul.” — Proverbs 22:24-25

“As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” — Proverbs 27:17

True friends encourage me to step out of my comfort zone, grow in my faith, and become a better version of myself. They hold me accountable with love and prayer, helping me overcome my flaws.

3. Time Doesn’t Change True Friendship

Have you ever reunited with a friend after years apart and felt like no time had passed? That’s a true friend.

They are always themselves—genuine, consistent, and authentic. The laughter, connection, and deep understanding remain, no matter how long.

4. True Friends Have Your Back—Especially in Prayer

“Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble… A triple-braided cord is not easily broken.” — Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

True friends actually pray for you—not just say they will. They stop in the moment to lift you up in prayer. I know this because I’ve been guilty of saying, “I’ll pray for you,” and then getting distracted by life. True friends make the time.

5. True Friends Love Unconditionally

“Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” — John 15:13

True friends love no matter what. They forgive, ask for forgiveness, and choose to love through mistakes, flaws, and challenging times. They always speak truth in love.

Today is Friday, and one of my friends is experiencing her Walk to Emmaus this weekend. I pray that we can all show her the love of true friendship—the kind that reflects God’s unconditional love and support.
