Reclaiming the Finish Line: My Ironman 70.3 Resilience Journey Begins
Reclaiming the Finish Line
My Ironman 70.3 Resilience Journey Begins
Let’s get one thing straight: I didn’t sign up for Ironman 70.3 Chattanooga because I’m in peak shape. In fact, I weigh 40 lbs more than I did at my last Ironman. I am the definition of “out of shape,” and in medical terms, my BMI lists me as obese. That was FREAKING hard to type. #Gulp#Shame

I signed up because I’m done feeling like I’ve lost control of my health.
Five years ago, I survived a kidnapping and hostage situation. That experience didn’t just take my safety—it stole my sense of freedom, my independence, and my identity as a human and an athlete. I went from finishing six Ironman races to not being able to leave the house without my service dog. From training for my new personal best (PR) to trying to get through the day without breaking down. From strong and driven… to exhausted, angry, bitter, and carrying 40 pounds of trauma weight—physically and emotionally.
And yet… here I am.
On Sunday, I took my first bike ride in five years. Mid-ride, this thought hit me like a lightning bolt:
“I should register for a race.”

The next morning, out of nowhere, a friend said:
“I’m thinking about doing Ironman 70.3 Chattanooga in May. You should do it too.”
Universe, I see you.
That was all I needed. I registered that night. A lot of thought went into it, and when I decided to recapture my passion, there was no hesitation. No more waiting for the “perfect” time. Game. Freakin’. On.
This is my time.
This Isn’t Just a Comeback Story—It’s a Fight
I’m not doing this for applause, likes, or medals. I’m doing it for me.
Because I’m sick of feeling stuck.
Because I’m done with grief stealing my joy.
Because I’ve done hard things before—and I will damn sure do them again.
This journey is about reclaiming my passion. Reclaiming my power. Reclaiming my story.
And yeah, I’m chubby right now. Out of shape. Struggling. But guess what? You don’t have to wait until you’re “ready” to start fighting for what you love. You just have to decide you’re not giving up.
Why This Journey Matters—for More Than Just Me
While this is personal, it’s not private because I know I’m not the only one trying to claw their way back from something painful.
That’s why I’m documenting every step of this 41-week Ironman 70.3 training journey—from the first ride to the finish line. Videos. Blogs. Honest reflections. No filters, no BS. Just the truth about what it means to rebuild when life has burned you down.
This story isn’t just mine. It’s for:
- Survivors who don’t know where to start.
- Athletes who’ve lost their way.
- People carrying invisible trauma.
- Anyone who needs a reminder that they’re not broken—they’re rebuilding.
Let’s Do This—Together
I may have registered without a plan or budget (yeah, hindsight is 20/20), but the mission is clear:
Take back what was stolen.
Inspire others to rise.
Show the world what’s possible when we lead with heart and fight like hell.
