Revisit Your Mission and Values Annually: The Culture Boost You Didn’t Know You Needed
Revisit Your Mission & Boost Your Culture
By Angela Gill Nelms
It’s easy to fall into the rhythm of the daily grind. Meetings, deadlines, operations—it all keeps moving forward, often without pause. And in that forward momentum, something critical can get left behind: the heartbeat of your organization—your mission and values.
Many companies and leaders pour energy into crafting powerful mission statements and carefully chosen core values. They frame them, print them, and display them proudly. But then… they freeze them in time, treating them as untouchable. The mindset becomes: We worked so hard on this—why would we ever need to change it?
Here’s a healthier perspective: times change, teams evolve, and so do your customers.
The truth is, what resonated three years ago may no longer reflect who your organization is today, or who it’s becoming. And that’s not a sign of weakness. It’s a sign of growth.

Adopt a Healthy Cadence of Reflection
One of the most powerful things a company can do is build in an annual check-in—a full-day event, same time every year, dedicated to revisiting your mission, values, and company culture.
Put it on the calendar. Make it part of your rhythm.
This isn’t just about course correcting or rewriting statements. It’s about checking the pulse of your people, your direction, and your relevance in the world you’re serving. Are your values still alive in day-to-day decisions? Does your mission still spark something in your team?

The Hidden Culture Win
Here’s the bonus: when you open the door for reflection and participation, your culture shifts – automatically. People feel seen, heard, and valued. This sends a strong message that leadership isn’t just talking about culture—they’re investing in it.
Too few companies display this kind of intentionality. But the ones that do? They see engagement rise, innovation increase, and trust deepen.
So don’t let your mission collect dust. Make it a living, breathing part of your organization’s journey. Reflect. Refresh. Reignite—every year.
