Why Your Resume Isn’t Getting You Hired (And What to Do Instead): Job Search Strategy for High Performers

Job Search Strategy for High Performers
Your Perfect LinkedIn Profile Isn’t Good Enough
We’ve all been told that a polished resume and a long list of activities are the keys to getting hired. Maybe the better advice is to stop trying to “look impressive” and start proving you can actually solve a problem!
Most people don’t lose out on job offers because they aren’t capable. Really, they lose because they’re forgettable (not nice to hear, but it’s true). They show up with clean, pretty LinkedIn profiles and a pile of credentials, but when you strip it down, there’s very little evidence of impact.
That’s nice and all, but is that really going to get you hired?
Nobody hires potential alone. They hire proof.

Reframe it! Evidence Over Activities
Most resumes are just activity reports. “I was president of…” or “I participated in…”.
Activity is neutral! What does that mean?: It doesn’t reduce risk, and employers don’t pay for effort alone…they pay for outcomes.
At 29, as a single mom, I went back to Georgia Tech. On paper, I looked like a risk (older than my classmates, responsible for a toddler, and no safety net…what could go wrong?!).
I could have spent my time trying to “look the part.” Instead, I focused on demonstrating that I could deliver under pressure, and that shift is what made the difference.
What Leaders Are ACTUALLY Looking For
When I’m interviewing someone, I’m not just looking at their enthusiasm (though, yes, enthusiasm is great). I’m also evaluating risk.
Here’s what I’m asking myself:
- Can this person reduce friction on my team?
- Will they deliver when it matters?
- Can they fix what’s broken?
Early in my career, I realized very quickly that what matters most in high-stakes environments is steadiness and reliability. People aren’t looking for a “polished” candidate; they are looking for stability.
Your job is to show that YOU can create it.
How to Build Your Evidence Bank
Stop collecting certificates and start collecting receipts. For every role you want, you need to be able to answer:
- The Problem: What did you notice was broken?
- The Approach: What did you actually do? (No fluff)
- The Outcome: What was the measurable result?
- The “Why”: Why did it matter to the business?
If you can’t explain why it mattered, you aren’t done yet. That’s key when you’re on the job search as a high performer.
Rejection is Just Data, so Make It Count
A “no” is not a verdict. It’s information.
Survival was the first chapter of my own story; recovery was the real work. Healing (and rebuilding a career) isn’t a switch you flip. It’s a decision you make again tomorrow. If your story isn’t landing, adjust the framing and iterate.
The people who win are not immune to rejection. They are just more stubborn than the obstacles in their way.
Being brave isn’t about being reckless or loud. It’s about being intentional.
Don’t settle for “less” by just staying busy. Build proof. Show up whole.
Be brave. Be badass.
