How to Balance Political Views and Mental Health
Balancing Political Views & Mental Health
RAN’s Joshua Young speaks to navigating this complicated topic
How to Balance Political Views and Mental Health
With our country becoming continuously more divided on political issues, potentially divisive conversations matters are inevitable (especially with elections in full swing!) That said, these types of hard conversations do not have to be relationship-ruining or anxiety-inducing. If anything, the current political division shows that now, more than ever, these difficult conversations need to be had so that we can work together to find agreement and make positive change.
With this said, it’s easy to understand why people might feel uneasy at navigating these conversational waters, particularly when children are involved. This is something Joshua spoke to beautifully, and I wanted to take the opportunity to highlight it here. Take a look at this excerpt from the essay:
“In today’s politically charged environment, the divide in beliefs isn’t just affecting our conversations, it’s impacting our mental health. As a parent, I find myself trying to guide my son, who will be voting for the first time this year, through the complex emotions that come with political discourse. It’s a challenge to navigate, especially when he’s exposed to different viewpoints from multiple households, as he splits time between his mother’s house and mine. The most important lesson I can share with him, however, isn’t just about politics, it’s about maintaining mental well-being amid the chaos.”
